Help Expand Healthcare Access in Greater Lansing Through Our

OPEN THE DOORS APPEAL

Dear Friend,

I am writing to you today to share that Unity Health Center is forging ahead in establishing a primary care center that prioritizes the uninsured, underinsured, and those utilizing Medicaid. I hope you will join in supporting our important goal of opening doors of a soon to be renovated clinic within the Nonprofit Hub of Child and Family Charities on Greenlawn Avenue in the heart of Lansing, by the end of the year.

Without equitable access to quality healthcare, complex and myriad issues facing underserved and minority groups will only worsen. As of March 2026, over 69,000 residents of Clinton, Eaton, and Ingham counties rely on Medicaid; worse yet, nearly 30,000 people under 65 years are completely uninsured.

Driven by minority stress, discrimination, stigma, social isolation, and barriers to culturally competent healthcare, underserved and minority groups experience vast disparities in healthcare. In our tri-county area, the infant mortality rate for Black mothers is more than twice as high as those born to white mothers (2018-2022). 1 in 5 sexual minority adults and more than 1 in 3 gender minority adults report avoiding or delaying necessary care due to mistrust and stigma.

Unity Health Center will work to reduce these disparities by creating an inclusive environment and providing bilingual (Spanish), culturally responsive, trauma-informed primary care to historically underserved populations, including BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and Hispanic/Latinx.

Individual donors are critical during this launch period because corporations often withhold sponsorship until doors are open, and many grants require 1-2 years of operational data.

When you support Unity Health Center, you will be directly impacting our community’s most vulnerable children and adults during a very uncertain time of government healthcare spending/funding.

Every donation is important and will have an impact no matter the size. Please accept our sincere thanks for any help you can provide.

Sincerely,

Aimee Brookens, DO
